Blacktop playground coatings

How blacktop becomes a playground, step by step.

Playground coatings follow a sport-court process: clean, patch cracks, apply one or two acrylic resurfacer coats, add color coats or marking paint, then lay out lines and stencils. These steps are based on sport-court products.

Application needs temperatures above 50°F during and for 24 hours after, with no rain forecast. Foot traffic typically waits 24 hours after the final resurfacer coat, and a clear sealer needs 48 hours before play.

Marking paints are not floor paints and can be slippery when wet, so sport-surface coatings suit large play areas. Acrylic court surfaces are commonly resurfaced every 4–8 years, depending on use, drainage and climate.
